Project 1

By wmuham2

This is why I came to grad school. kudos to project 1. Anyway, I traveled Florida Blvd the day the project was assigned. I had thought of what I wanted to take pictures of before I went out, which was vacant properties. I counted the number of vacant properties to make sure the number was sufficient (25-100). My second trip was to take pictures. I started  at North 13th Street and Florida with only pictures on one side of the road (the opposite of the direction I was going), I assumed it would be safer that way. I turned around at North Sherwood Forest and took pictures on the other side.  I numbered each shot in sequence with an address or intersection this proved to make it easier later. I then cropped the photos with Photoshop using the batched command, which took less than a minute for the whole set. It took longer to learn the command but it was worth it.  Yahoo maps aided a little in creating placemarkers. Placemarking took the longest time.  I installed VPN.  The rest was just following the instructions that I noted. Can’t wait for part 2.

I believe that theme of vacant lots is good but you need to use the lot types, or another feature to enhance the narrative. Think of the Star Guitar video and the idea that while it might have been similar landscape types it was how close or how far from the train that guided the musical relationships. Size and relationship to sky and ground also made a difference, where buildings, oil tanks, etc had a lower sound and power lines, etc related to higher sounds… very literal but it worked as a guiding element.
